A brief history of the Foundation

The Italian Hospital at Queen Square, in London, was an institution that played an important part in supporting the Italian community since the later part of the nineteen-century. Commendator Giovanni Battista Ortelli, a benefactor of the fathers of St. Peter, founded the Hospital in 1884. Ortelli had built a successful business in London, and was prompted to found the hospital when he became aware of the difficulties experienced by his non-English speaking compatriots in London's hospitals. Ortelli was encouraged and supported in his ambition by the fathers of St. Peter's, who became chaplains of the Hospital. In its heydays, the Hospital achieved reputation as a highly respected medical facility, which attracted top-notch professionals. However, over time, the changing needs of the Italian community, the establishment of the National Health Service and the soaring costs of hospital’s management, made the Italian Hospital extremely difficult to keep. It had to close in 1990 when financial problems became unbearable.

Closure of the hospital, lead to the sale of the building in Queen Square. The revenue generated gave rise to a Charitable institution named “The Italian Hospital Fund” whose remit is to continue the original mission of the Italian Hospital through the financial support of persons of Italian nationality or descent in need of medical assistance for the relief of sickness, disability or bodily or mental infirmity.
